Basically IEMI means International Mobile Equipment Identity.
To check IMEI of any mobile :
On the main screen type *#06#
Information you get from the IMEI XXXXXXXXXXXXXX X TACFACSNRSP
TAC = Type approval code of your Nokia Mobile FAC = Final assembly code of your cellphone SNR = Serial number of your Nokia Phone SP = Spare

Hey you remind me of the incident, 3months ago my one colleague bought new N95 just for Rs 6700 somewhere from Delhi Gaffar market, he explored the feature of cell phone n he was very happy with the specification specially the one that allows him to Switch on the phone even without SIM card. He paid the cash and moved to the next shop to buy a new MTNL 3G-SIM card, finally submitted the documents and got the SIM.
now when he inserted the sim and switched on his phone he got one weird message something like "SIM card regestration failed", he tried this several time but it didnt work however it was working with my cellphone. And then we approach the shop owner and said "bhai its not working with my sim card" and in reply shop owner sticked with a single statement "who are you? this is the first time you visited my shop." and then he took the phone and dialed *#06# and said " SORRY! This phone dosent belong to our shop as we dont have such phone without IMEI nuumber".
He didn't accepted that phone and suggested us not to buy a phone which dont have a valid IMEI

Implantation of Genuine IMEI on non-genuine IMEI handsets is now Officially Closed. Previously if someone doubt that his/her phone has invalid IMEI number(like in some Chinese phone) then they can get the Genuine IMEI implanted on his phone by expending less than Rs200.
Authorized IMEI implanting Services were set up by the Mobile Standard Alliance of India and was governed by Department of Telecom(DoT). Officially closed on Dec 1 2009.
So for now, I can only say legally its not possible in India.
Visit http://www.msai.in/ for more info on Genuine IMEI Implant program (GII) across India.
